By Reid Decker & Michelle Hines
It has become increasingly popular across our great United
States for the theme "Staycation" to
ring out loudly. What better way to
experience Portland then purposely
vacationing as a tourist. We went down
to Portland Saturday Market for
inspiration and compiled 5 easy steps to
help you become a tourist in your own
hometown.
What's the best thing about being a
hometown tourist? It's so easy to do.
Get away without going away! Planning to
get away can be a challenge these days,
with both time and money at a premium
for many would-be travelers.
Fortunately, there is a way to satisfy
wanderlust that is easy on both.
Discover what others come to see in your
hometown. Explore the affordable,
eclectic and unsurpassed mix of dining,
shopping, history, art and nature that
is Portland - on your own or with your
family. Ask someone about the visitor
attractions in their hometown and they
might well tell you that they have never
visited that place. It seems many of us
take the place we grew up in for
granted. Why the rush to visit somewhere
else? We have the rest of our lives to
call in and pay a visit. In a worldwide
global recession and with our carbon
footprints becoming ever more
noticeable, it makes sense to check out
what your local environs have to offer.

Get Back to Nature. Natural beauty of awe-inspiring diversity is all around you
in the greater Portland area. From
Multnomah Falls, to the wonders of Mt.
Hood to the many lakes and rivers,
nature beckons.
For a more urban park experience, visit
the Portland Rose Gardens, Lan Su
Chinese Garden or Tom McCall Waterfront
Park.

Take a Step Back in Time. Experience Portland's proud history. Stroll through Old Town
Chinatown and along the historic
waterfront district. Take time to read
the historical plaques and plan a stop
at the Oregon Maritime Museum (www.oregonmaritimemuseum.org).
Family-Fun Events.
Portland is very kid friendly, from ball
games at
PGE Park, to roller skating at Oaks
Park, there is something for every
"little one" in the family. Waterfront
Park plays host to many festivals like;
Cinco de Mayo, Rose Festival, Portland
Bridge Pedal, and Portland Market.

The fun is in
experiencing your child's joy as
everything is new and exciting for their
first time. They can really soak in the
experience like a thirsty traveler.
Biking
with your children is a great way to
spend quality time with them and instill
the importance of exercising and
educating them about environmental
issues like carbon footprints.

Tantalize Your Taste Buds. Food is always a key element in the success of any vacation, and Portland restaurants offer the
variety needed to ensure memorable
excursions. Food carts, ever more
popular, line streets offering a trip
around the world in international
cuisines.

Shop Until You Drop.
Like food, shopping is one of the guilty
pleasures of being on vacation, and
shopping in Portland provides hours of
browsing pleasure for the whole family
downtown in the malls and trendy
boutiques. A fun trip to Saturday
Market will net you unique and
personable gifts.

Pat Hansen
Great Northwest Ice Cream Company
www.greatnwicecream.com
1. How
did you get started?
Back in Iowa, we grew up eating Whitey's ice cream. It was
handcrafted and was the best ice cream
ever. When we moved to the Northwest,
we realized nothing like it existed
here. So, we found an eighty seven year
old gentleman in Bothell, Washington,
who had been making ice cream for over
40 years. By that time he was retired
and agreed to teach us how to make ice
cream the old fashioned way. We started
churning ice cream in our garage and
passed it around to our neighbors who
were more than happy to be our guinea
pigs. After that we rented space in a
restaurant kitchen and became vendors at
the Vancouver Farmer's Market.
2. Who has influenced you most in your life?
I've thought about that many times and have come to the
conclusion that there really isn't one
specific person who has influenced me.
I believe that almost everyone has
something good to contribute to society
so I just try to watch and learn from
others.
3.
What is the difference between PSM and
other Markets?
It can be found in the same place, at the same time, every
weekend March through December. When
our customers purchase an item, they
know they can find the artist or
craftsperson again. There is no
admission fee, free entertainment, there
are often children's activities and
Portland, the Northwest's coolest and
most eclectic city, gives it a spirit of
it's own.
Unlike most outdoor markets, the
craftspeople/artists/vendors are
required to be members and the
members oversee and govern the Market.
I believe the nucleus of member
oversight and guardianship makes it
unique in that the passion each member
feels for their individual
business becomes intertwined with a
passion for the market which gives it
a vitality unique to others. And last
but not least, Portland Saturday Market
has better ice cream than any of the
others!!
4. How would you describe the difference between "arts" and
"crafts"?
Now, that's a tough question which has been debated by
many. Some say that art is purely
aesthetic and crafts have a practical
purpose.
I've done a little research and have
decided that the following statement,
which I found on the Internet, is the
most agreeable to my sensibilities:
"It's art if you sign it on the front.
It's craft if you sign it on the
bottom."
I might add that "It's handi-craft if
you used a hot glue gun."
I also like this: If you want to move
your work from craft to art, add another
0 to the price.
5.
What is the last book you read?
Half the Sky. It exposes and discusses abuses and the
brutal treatment of girls and women in
the developing world. It describes the
power and resilience of women who would
have every reason to give up but never
do. It was eye opening. We are lucky
to live in America.

Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre

Who's in Hare's House?
Tears of Joy Puppet
Theatre performs Who's in Hare's House
based on a folktale from East Africa.
Sungura the hare returns home to find
there is someone in his house. The
intruder claims to be the "son of the
long one" and refuses to leave. Sungura's
friends, Weha the jackal, Pembele the
rhinoceros and Tembo the elephant
all try to help but they are frightened
away by the "monster". No one can help
until Chura the frog, "the son of the
great leaper," arrives.
Who's
in Hare's House has been a favorite of
Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre audiences
since it was originally produced in
1977. Tears of Joy Theatre brings
amazing puppetry to audiences throughout
the U.S. and abroad, performing for over
200,000 people each year. Founded in
1971, the theatre is recognized
nationally for its commitment to
excellence and innovation. Four of
Tears of Joy Theatre's productions have
received American puppetry's highest
award, the Citations of Excellence in
the Art of Puppetry. The theatre has
also received a Young Audiences'
Sunburst Award for its
exemplary commitment to Arts in
Education.
